Introduction
The story of Mubahalah is one of the clearest and most important events in the history of Islam. It took place during the Prophet Muhammad's universal call to Islam, when letters were being sent to rulers, governors, and religious leaders across the world. Among those letters was one sent to the Christian bishop of Najran.
What followed was not a battle with swords, but a battle of truth. It became a moment in which faith, evidence, and divine revelation all came together in a powerful and unforgettable way.
Historical Background
Najran was a Christian center in Yemen, not far from Mecca. Its people had their own beliefs about Jesus Christ, and they were part of the wider group of Christians whom the Prophet invited to Islam.
The Prophet Muhammad (S) wrote to the bishop of Najran and began his letter by praising the God of Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, and Jacob. In that letter, he called them away from worshipping people and toward the worship of Allah alone. He asked them to leave allegiance to human beings and give their allegiance to God. He also warned that if they refused, they would either need to pay a special tax or be ready for war.
The bishop did not ignore the letter. He gathered religious personalities and discussed it with them. The Christian scholars were aware of some of the signs and qualities that had been foretold about the Holy Prophet. Because of that, they sent a delegation to Medina to meet him and study his character for themselves. Three religious figures headed that envoy, including the bishop himself.
The Story
When the Christian delegation arrived in Medina, the Prophet (S) received them. He invited them to Islam and recited verses from the Holy Quran to them.
The delegation claimed, "We have been Muslims before you."
The Prophet answered them, "You are liars."
He then explained that three things were keeping them away from Islam: they ate pork, they worshipped the cross, and they believed that God had a son.
After that, a serious debate began about Jesus Christ.
The Christians believed that Jesus was God. They pointed to the miracles of Jesus: giving life to the dead, knowing the unseen, healing the sick, and being born without a father. The Prophet (S), however, firmly stated that Jesus was a human being. The Christians could not accept this.
At this point, divine revelation came down. Among the verses revealed was the Verse of Mubahalah, which ordered a mutual invocation of curses if the Christians still refused the truth. The Prophet then told the delegation that Allah had commanded him to do Mubahalah with them if they did not become Muslims.
The Christians answered that they needed time to think. They withdrew and held a private meeting among themselves.
Inside that meeting, the bishop warned them that Muhammad was truly the Messenger of Allah, and that if they entered into Mubahalah with him, God's punishment would surely come. Still, they decided that the next day would be the appointed day for the event.
The bishop then gave them careful instructions. He told them to watch how Muhammad came to the meeting. If he came with his family members, they should stay away, because that would mean he truly believed in what he said and would not place his nearest relatives in danger unless he was certain. But if he came with his followers, then they should go forward, because that would show his claim was weak.
The next day came.
The Prophet Muhammad (S) arrived at the place of Mubahalah, and he brought only four people with him: Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib, Lady Fatimah al-Zahra, Imam al-Hasan, and Imam al-Husayn.
When the bishop saw them, he asked, "Who are these?"
He was told, "This is his cousin, the woman is his daughter, and these two are her sons."
At that moment, the bishop understood the gravity of what he was seeing. He turned to his companions and said that these were people who, if they asked Allah to remove a mountain, the mountain would certainly be removed. He warned them not to enter into Mubahalah, or they would be destroyed and no Christian would remain on the earth.
So the Christian group backed away from the mutual cursing. They gave up the challenge and accepted a treaty instead. As part of that agreement, they paid the tax.
The event ended there, with the truth of the Prophet's Household made clear before the Christian delegation of Najran.
Quranic Verses

"Say: O followers of the Book! come to an equitable proposition between us and you that we shall not serve any but Allah and that we shall not associate aught with Him, and that some of us shall not take others for lords besides Allah; but if they turn back, then say: Bear witness that we are Muslims."

Surah Al-Imran (3:61)
"But whoever disputes with you in this matter after what has come to you of knowledge, then say: come to us, call our sons and your sons and our women and your women and our near people and your near people, then let us be earnest in prayer, and pray for the curse of Allah on the liars."
Brief explanation: This is the Verse of Mubahalah, which began the divine challenge between the Muslims and the Christians of Najran.

إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ لِيُذْهِبَ عَنْكُمُ الرِّجْسَ أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ وَيُطَهِّرَكُمْ تَطْهِيرًا
